 Myths and Misconceptions Explained

Hypnosis is a safe, effective and fast approach to changing behaviour and thought patterns. Due to the popularity of stage hypnotism there are a number of misconceptions about hypnotherapy. Remember that stage hypnotists are putting on a show. They choose the most suggestible people, carefully screened, more likely to play the fool while they can claim, "I was hypnotised". Their subjects are generally extroverts and have been drinking. The stage hypnotist has a large audience to pick from and carefully chooses the people that will give the best show and quickly dismisses the people on the stage that are not.

Hypnotherapy, while working on the same principles, is a profession that places the clients' benefits above all else. Because of the popular misconception of hypnosis this page has been included to present the facts.

Can I be hypnotised against my will?

NO, you can't be hypnotised unless you want to be. All hypnosis is self hypnosis as you have to accept the suggestion that you are getting more relaxed. Not even the most experience hypnotist could hypnotise you if YOU did not want to be hypnotised!

Will I tell all my secrets while I am hypnotised?

No, hypnosis is a deep sense of relaxation where the senses are very alert. Your conscious mind is encouraged to wander and drift so it doesn't interrupt the session by analysing everything! But your conscious mind is always able to process certain information and the client chooses what they tell the hypnotherapist while in hypnosis.

Can I be made to do things I wouldn't normally do?

You cannot be hypnotised and told to do something that you would not normally do, for example to commit crime. Your mind only ever accepts suggestions that are concurrent with your value system. If you were given the suggestion to do something against your beliefs, the fail safe mechanisms of your mind would kick in and stop you.

For a client who is seeing a hypnotherapist to assist in quitting smoking, the situation of being a non-smoker is a position that they are comfortable with. Therefore the suggestion of being a non-smoker fits with their value system and is accepted by the subconscious mind.

Will I be stuck in hypnosis if the tape breaks?

If the tape were to break or there was a power cut or any other problem you would either come out of hypnosis on your own or you would drift off into a safe peaceful sleep and wake up naturally.
